When it comes to delivering consistent, high-quality edging for retail giants like Tesco, KFC and The Fragrance Shop, Adams Joinery Ltd knows the stakes. As a specialist architectural joinery company, their reputation depends on precision. But when the company’s aging edgebander started to impact production, Adams Joinery turned to the Holz-Her Sprint 1329 edgebander to revolutionise workflow and enhance efficiency.

Sprint 1329 multi edgebander from Holz-Her: integrated, highly efficient multi-function milling technology

“The right machine in any workshop should help, not hinder production,” says Alex Adkin, Senior Production Manager at Adams Joinery. “Our old edgebander didn’t give us the control we needed over our edging. Glue changes were tedious, manual set-ups were time-consuming, and we often had to hand-finish panels after edging.”

Recognising the Sprint 1329 as a comprehensive solution, Adams Joinery was drawn to its robust German engineering and automated features designed to simplify operations and deliver repeatable, invisible glue lines.

Thanks to the Sprint 1329's flexible Glu Jet system, heat-up, glue change and cleaning can each be completed in just minutes

Innovative features that deliver results

“The Sprint’s multi-function milling, fast setting technology – fa.s.t – and integrated finishing units immediately stood out to us,” Alex shares. “It de-skills the operation, while its ability to apply solid wood, melamine, HPL, real wood coil, and veneer lippings up to 15mm thick on workpieces up to 60mm thick, gives us the flexibility we need.”

A stand-out feature for Alex’s team is the Glu Jet system, renowned for its rapid heat-up times, seamless switching between EVA and PUR adhesives, and effortless cleaning. “We thought it sounded too good to be true, but after seeing it in action, we were sold. No other manufacturer could match it.”

Before the Sprint, glue changes were a three-hour ordeal requiring 5kg of adhesive. With the Sprint’s Glu Jet, it takes just five minutes and only 250g of slugs.  “The automatic cleaning function has made a big impact on our production,” Alex adds. “It saves hours of downtime and prevents backlogs.”

Automatic setup functions further streamline operations. “If we’re handling panels of different thicknesses, the Sprint adjusts settings automatically with a click of a button. It compensates for discrepancies, allowing fine adjustments as small as 0.01mm,” Alex explains.

The edgebander features a 21.5in touch screen colour monitor with 16:9 format. This high performance control with simple operation allows for rational machine set-up and change-over

Eliminating human error with finishing units

The Sprint’s finishing units and anti-static spray eliminate the need for hand-finishing. “With buffers, scrapers, and spray units, we avoid scraping off glue by hand, saving two to three minutes per board. This not only boosts efficiency but removes the risk of human error, like damaging a panel with a chisel, for example.”

The Sprint’s intuitive design has also reduced reliance on skilled operators. “Previously, only two employees could use our old edgebander. Now, eight people operate the Sprint with ease, following simple on-screen prompts. This flexibility safeguards us against labour shortages,” Alex remarks.

After 12 months with the Sprint, the impact is clear. “This machine has been a game changer,” Alex says. “It’s not just faster and more accurate – it’s given us confidence to deliver higher-quality results while reducing costs. While it’s an investment, its capabilities and build quality ensure it pays for itself many times over.”

Outstanding service from Holz-Her

Equally impressive is the aftercare offered by Holz-Her. “Their troubleshooting is exceptional,” Alex notes. “If we encounter an issue, we can message their experts and get a resolution in minutes. That kind of service is unheard of in this industry.”

Adams Joinery has no regrets about choosing the Holz-Her Sprint: “Every feature is used, and every feature works brilliantly. It’s rare to find a machine like that,” Alex concludes.
