FAQs relating to Powermat moulders & safety


Q: How safe are modern Powermat moulders?

A: All machines supplied by Weinig carry the CE mark – a legal requirement for machinery suppliers. Be cautious of misleading CE markings often seen on some Chinese machinery, which may refer to ‘Chinese Export’ rather than genuine CE compliance.


Q: Are there different classifications of CE certificates?

A: Yes, there are two types:

  1. CE Certificate of Compliance – For standalone machines, such as a single moulder or profile grinder.

  2. CE Certificate of Conformity – For machines integrated into a production line with other machinery, whether from Weinig or other suppliers. Each supplier provides a certificate for their machine, but a compliance certificate for the entire line should be obtained by the user through a third party.


Q: Is a CE certificate of compliance sufficient?

A: No. While it covers the machine itself, it doesn’t address interfaces with operators or the immediate work environment. Following installation, conduct a risk assessment that includes the following:

  • Identifying potential hazards

  • Assessing the risk of each hazard

  • Controlling hazards

  • Recording observations

  • Reviewing implemented controls.

Ensure operators are trained and competent to handle the machinery safely.

Q: What if my operators are semi-skilled?

A: Woodworking machines are inherently dangerous. Modern Powermats offer advanced safety features and robust guarding, but risks during setup remain, even for experienced machinists. For untrained operators limited to feeding material into pre-set machines, safety systems can be modified to restrict their access, subject to the machine’s control system.

  • Machines equipped with PowerCom or WMC can be programmed to stop completely before safety hoods are opened.


Q: Can control systems help enhance safety?

A: Yes. Both PowerCom and WMC systems allow operators to log in with profiles that limit their access to certain parameters, ensuring only trained individuals can make critical changes.

Q: What if a spanner is accidentally left in the machine during setup?

Q: What are the risks when splitting wood on a moulder?

A: Splitting occurs when a single piece of wood enters and multiple pieces exit due to cutting or sawing. This poses significant risks. Always use an anti-kickback device when splitting – no exceptions. Older machines required manual attachment of anti-kickback units, but newer models feature slide-mounted units for effortless positioning.

Q: How can noise emissions be reduced?

A: Noise levels depend on factors like timber species, feed speed, cutter RPM and knife projection. Larger knife projections create more noise due to increased air displacement. For machines running at 12,000rpm, Weinig offers an optional reinforced sound enclosure, which is strongly recommended for reducing noise.


Q: What should I know about tooling & safety?
