West Fraser has published a new factsheet proudly announcing that its UK operations are now officially certified as carbon negative, reinforcing its position as a responsible producer of timber panel products and setting a benchmark for the wider industry.

The four-page publication opens with a clear statement of intent: “Since our founding 70 years ago, West Fraser has recognised its responsibility to the environment and society, while delivering solid financial performance. Guided by our values and leveraging strategic partnerships, we aim to integrate sustainability across all aspects of our business.”
The document highlights that all West Fraser UK products are net carbon negative – meaning they sequester more CO₂e than is emitted during their production. For environmentally conscious specifiers and builders, this provides assurance that the company’s approach to sustainability is “rooted in science, guided by global standards, and inspired by a vision of a future where forests, products and innovation work together to address climate change.”
Supporting this claim, West Fraser reports that its European operations sequester 1.1 million tonnes of CO₂e annually. Its OSB products also hold an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide – the highest available score.
Other progress includes:
Three-quarters of the group’s renewable energy use comes from biomass, with a further 4.5% from sources such as solar.
Across Europe, 100% of grid-purchased electricity is guaranteed renewable (wind, hydro and solar).
In forestry management, 72.4 million seedlings are planted annually in Canada and more than 2 million in the US.
The company has achieved a 22% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and a 13% reduction in Scope 3.
Less than 1% of managed forest areas are harvested each year, enabling long-term, sustainable cycles.
The factsheet concludes: “Build with purpose: All our UK-made engineered wood panels are proudly net carbon negative and can offset building emissions,” with a link to further details in the 2024 Sustainability Report.
Visually striking with full-colour photography, the publication delivers a persuasive message, underlining West Fraser’s commitment to achieving a carbon negative – yet positive – future.
