Recent research from the Federation of Master Builders’ (FMB) State of Trade report highlights that the three most common projects its members are undertaking are renovations (70%), home improvements (70%) and major works (65%). In addition, according to the latest Homebuilding & Renovating Show survey, homeowners are willing to invest an average of £151,000 in their properties rather than move, and renovation projects are dominating the workloads of builders and other trades.
As a partner of the London Homebuilding & Renovating Show, which takes place at Excel London from 18–20 September 2026, the FMB maintains that the combination of a six-figure average project spend and high levels of renovation activity paints a picture of homeowners taking a long-term approach to their properties. Householders are investing in the creation of additional spaces, ranging from living rooms and home offices to gyms and bedrooms, modernising layouts regardless of the age of the property, and future-proofing their homes through refurbishment programmes or the installation of sustainable technologies such as HVAC systems and heat pumps.

The three most common types of projects undertaken by FMB members highlight that the market is focused on transformational work rather than cosmetic improvements. For builders, tradespeople, manufacturers and suppliers, these figures represent encouraging news because high-value projects typically generate demand across multiple trades and product categories, creating opportunities throughout the supply chain.
Nick Noble, Commercial & Events Director at Future PLC, says: “UK homeowners’ appetite for renovation shows no sign of slowing. We are seeing an average project value of £151,000, and this significant investment in their properties is creating strong demand across the construction sector. At the Homebuilding & Renovating Show, we are delighted to support the sector’s growth by attracting committed visitors with whom tradespeople can engage and build valuable relationships. This makes our show the essential event for anyone involved in home improvement and renovation.”
The London Homebuilding & Renovating Show will bring together hundreds of exhibitors under one roof, providing visitors with access to thousands of products and services to help them realise their dream projects. The show will also enable attendees to expand their knowledge through a range of masterclasses and seminars covering topics including extension design, project management and sustainable technologies. In addition, there will be opportunities for tradespeople and consumers to consult industry specialists, receive impartial advice through 15-minute one-to-one expert consultations, and network with peers and property professionals.
