Matthew Chilton, Senior Product Manager at Makita, discusses cordless routers and Makita’s RP001G 40VMax XGT 1/2in brushless plunge model

Requiring high power output and long-lasting batteries, 1/2in collet-compatible cordless routers are still a relatively new option for woodworking professionals. However, thanks to recent advancements in cordless technology, more tool manufacturers – such as Makita, for example – have started to offer these power-hungry, must-have machines.

What are the benefits of a cordless router?

The major advantage of any cordless tool is being unhindered by a power cable. Stepping on a cord or snagging it while you work can ruin the cut you’re trying to make as well as posing a health and safety risk. Removing the cable makes working with power tools safer and more reliable.

Cordless tools are also more site-friendly, as you don’t need to worry about finding an appropriate power source on a busy jobsite. This gives users the ability to pick up a cordless router anywhere and start working immediately.

The RP001G router runs on Makita’s XGT platform. What advantages does that offer?

The perceived disadvantage of cordless tools has always been that you sacrifice power output for ease of movement. However, Makita’s 40VMax XGT platform is specifically designed for maximum output and high-drain applications, which is great news for those regular router users. This development in technology means that the RP001G’s maximum cutting speed of 25,000rpm is even greater than that of the equivalent corded model.

What are some of the other key features of the RP001G that set it apart?

The RP001G is ergonomically designed to enhance comfort and ease of use, weighing only 4kg with a 5.0Ah Li-ion battery fitted, and with a compact height of just 294mm.

The machine is also equipped with soft start and an electronic brake, which limits recoil to prevent damage, while its constant speed control reduces the chance of a drop in cutting speed, thus maintaining a clean finish. It features a 3-stage depth stop, so you can quickly switch between pre-set depths for greater efficiency. The simple adjustment system also allows users to alter the cutting depth in 1mm increments, which ensures precision and accuracy.

Finally, the RP001G utilises a brushless motor to increase runtime and performance, allowing users to work for extended periods without interruption.
