New ultra-light TripleEco28 triple glazing from Allan Brothers Ltd

Allan Brothers has introduced TripleEco28 triple glazing across its Crafted range of solid timber windows and doors, becoming one of the first British manufacturers to offer the new ultra-light glazing technology

Designed to deliver the thermal performance of traditional 40mm triple glazing within a slim 28mm profile, TripleEco28 combines improved energy efficiency with a 24% reduction in weight compared with standard 28mm triple glazing.

The technology enables Allan Brothers to offer larger glazed areas and lower whole-window U-values without the need for bulkier frames, while maintaining the character and proportions of its Crafted timber windows and doors.

High thermal performance

TripleEco28 achieves a glass U-value (Ug) of 0.8, making it around 20% more energy-efficient than conventional 28mm triple glazing, which typically achieves a Ug of approximately 1.0. Its performance is comparable with many traditional 40mm argon-filled triple-glazed units.

The performance is achieved through a multi-layer construction incorporating a thin 1.1mm Monolithic Glass Core. Unlike conventional triple glazing, which generally uses three 4mm panes, the thinner central pane allows wider 10mm and 9mm cavities to be filled with argon gas, improving thermal insulation.

The glazing also incorporates two Low-E coatings rather than the single coating commonly found in traditional triple glazing. These act as a double heat shield, reflecting internal heat back into the property, while warm-edge spacers help minimise heat loss around the edge of the glass.

The outer Low-E coating also provides solar control, with a Gg-value of 0.345, helping to block approximately 65% of solar heat gain. This can improve heat retention during colder months while helping to reduce overheating during summer.

Lighter glazing, larger glazed areas

At 22.8kg per m², TripleEco28 is approximately 24% lighter than standard triple glazing, which weighs around 30kg per m².

The reduced weight helps overcome some of the structural limitations associated with heavier triple-glazed units, allowing Allan Brothers to incorporate larger energy-efficient glazed areas without significant changes to its existing frame designs. It also makes the units easier for installers and contractors to handle on site.

For homeowners, the result is the opportunity to enjoy wider views and increased natural light without compromising thermal efficiency. TripleEco28 has a colour rendering index (Ra) of 95.3, helping daylight appear clear and natural.

Toughened and laminated options are also available where additional security and improved acoustic performance are required.

Lower U-values for traditional timber windows

The glazing’s Ug value of 0.8 enables Allan Brothers’ Crafted Sliding-Sash windows to achieve whole-window U-values of 1.1W/m²K, without adding unnecessary weight or compromising their traditional timber appearance.

The Crafted Dual Turn range can also be upgraded to achieve U-values of 1.1W/m²K.

TripleEco28 can additionally be supplied with authentic-looking glazing bars. Integrated internal duplex spacers sit behind the bars to conceal the adhesive backing, helping to minimise the reflections and shadows often associated with thicker triple glazing.

This creates a more convincing multi-pane appearance, with glazing bars that look recessed and remain in proportion with the window.

A more recyclable glazing solution

The Monolithic Glass Core used in TripleEco28 is manufactured entirely from glass rather than a synthetic alternative, meaning the sealed unit is fully recyclable at the end of its service life.

The lower weight of each unit may also help reduce fuel consumption and packaging requirements during transportation.

By incorporating TripleEco28 into its existing Crafted frames, Allan Brothers can provide the benefits of high-performance triple glazing while retaining the traditional appearance and craftsmanship of its solid timber windows and doors.
