The Detroit Jacket: 70 years of Carhartt heritage

Carhartt’s classic Detroit Jacket has spent 70 years earning a reputation for hard-wearing toughness – and now it is part of the brand’s new Iconic range

The Carhartt Iconic J01 Duck Detroit Jacket (103828) has been building its status since 1954, worn by warehouse workers, farmhands and ranchers across America long before finding an audience worldwide.

The Detroit Jacket story actually began as the ‘Zipper Jacket’, first launched in blue denim in 1954 in both blanket-lined and unlined versions. Brown duck followed in 1955 and, over the decades, the jacket evolved through different linings and materials while retaining the short, practical shape that made it such a natural fit for working life. The style was originally referred to as an ‘Eisenhower jacket’, after the waist-length military jacket made famous by Second World War general and later US president Dwight D. Eisenhower.

It wasn’t until 1998 that the Zipper Jacket officially became the Detroit Jacket, taking the J01 style number as Carhartt’s growing product range called for a more distinctive identity. By then, its familiar silhouette had already been proven across more than four decades of hard work, with versions appearing in brown duck and blue denim and with blanket, quilt and even Scottfoam linings along the way. In 2011, its style number changed again to J001, but the straightforward combination of toughness, warmth and freedom to work remained at the heart of the jacket.

This updated version is as rugged as the original, made from durable cotton duck with a warm stripe blanket lining through the body and smooth quilted nylon through the sleeves. It features a corduroy-trimmed collar and full-length front zipper, while the signature drop-tail hem offers extra coverage at the back while leaving plenty of clearance for a tool belt. Wind-resistant Wind Fighter™ construction and snap-adjustable cuffs round out a jacket built for genuinely cold, hard-working days.

The range also includes the Iconic Crawford Detroit Jacket (106208), a women’s take on the same legendary shape. Constructed from Micro Sand Stretch Canvas with Rugged Flex™ technology, it offers the freedom of movement modern workwear demands, in a slightly loose fit that sits just below the waist. It is again deliberately cut to accommodate a tool belt.
