When the global woodworking and wood processing industry gathers at LIGNA 2025 in Hannover from 26–30 May, it will do so amid challenging conditions. New US tariffs and international countermeasures are increasing risks across many sectors – and LIGNA is no exception. But throughout its 50+ year history, the trade fair has consistently proven to be a driver of innovation and a source of orientation, even in difficult times. With the 2025 'SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION' focus topic, LIGNA provides a platform not only to address today’s risks, but also to actively explore the opportunities of a changing era.

“Where global business relations come under pressure, LIGNA focuses on sustainable and resilient perspectives,” says Stephanie Wagner, Head of LIGNA at Deutsche Messe. “This year, our exhibitors will show that wood – as a renewable raw material – is key to an environmentally conscious and competitive future.”

Proven machines, forward-looking technologies

Among those shaping the future of woodworking machinery is Siemens. “Imagine a world where your machine solutions are not only efficient, but also sustainable,” says Sébastien Liénart, Head of Business Development – Production Machines for Wood at Siemens. “We’re making that vision a reality. Our solutions combine scalable automation with digital technologies through open interfaces. Whether it’s about quality, flexibility, reliability, or sustainability, Siemens delivers the tools needed to stay competitive and meet today’s challenges.”

At LIGNA, Siemens will present innovations including AI-based quality inspection and Industrial Edge, merging proven systems with cutting-edge technology. A key highlight is the Industrial Edge Ecosystem, which unites Siemens with other companies to create flexible edge computing solutions for manufacturers and machine builders.

Also on display will be a working model of a processing machine that demonstrates how a PLC-based automation solution can be implemented using Siemens’ extensive portfolio. Visitors will also get to see Inspekto, a powerful visual quality control system tailored to woodworking, in live action – both on real components and via digital twins.

Sawmill solutions for a demanding market

Raphael Burger, Member of the Sales and Executive Management Board at LINCK Holzverarbeitungstechnik GmbH – Europe’s largest sawmill equipment manufacturer – stresses the need for innovation in a tough market: “Sawmill operators face two major challenges – limited and costly roundwood supply and strong pricing pressure. Their future competitiveness depends on boosting value yield,” says Burger.

LINCK has long focused on this goal and will introduce the PRO NANO line, a system designed specifically for small-diameter logs. It comes in three variants, operates without log turning devices, and requires minimal space – all while maintaining maximum value yield.

For existing LINCK customers, the company offers extensive modernization options, from control systems to structural upgrades. One example is the Log Motion Control system, which increases value yield by 0.5-1.5% with a typical payback in just one to two years.

Also on display will be myLINCK, a digital platform for machine condition monitoring, maintenance and process optimisation: “myLINCK gives us transparency in sawing and significantly boosts system availability. It also makes work easier and more appealing for staff – a key factor in retaining skilled workers,” says Burger. “Sustainable production also means better working conditions. LIGNA remains a powerful space for innovation and dialogue. We look forward to helping shape the future of wood processing together with our customers, partners, and visitors.”

Sustainability & digitalisation as profit drivers

At Fagus-GreCon’s stand in Hall 26, visitors can explore smart, remote-capable systems that conserve materials and reduce waste. “Sustainability and digitalisation are now key to long-term profitability. These megatrends matter more than ever to our customers,” says Thomas Brenner, Head of Global Marketing.

As a long-time innovation leader, Fagus-GreCon will showcase a forward-thinking portfolio focused on sustainable growth. Highlights include the EDGEINSPECT laser-based edge inspection system and smart solutions in fire prevention and industrial measurement.

“With our future-proof technologies, customers can prepare today for tomorrow’s business,” says Brenner. “We’re also proud to celebrate 50 years of GreCon and 50 years of LIGNA. As always, we’re excited to welcome trade visitors from around the world.”

Long-term competitiveness through coating innovation

Venjakob, based in East Westphalia-Lippe, will present its turnkey coating lines – complete systems covering surface pre-treatment, coating, drying and automation.

“LIGNA is more than just brand exposure, it’s a chance to strengthen our role as a leading provider of customized coating solutions,” says Technical Managing Director Rudolf Eickhoff. “We tailor systems to meet our customers’ exact needs, with sustainability and resource efficiency built in. At a time when many sectors face shrinking sales and tough competition, sharing sustainable solutions is vital to staying competitive long-term.”

Eickhoff stresses that LIGNA is also about trust-building: “Face-to-face exchange is more important than ever. Trust is the foundation of successful projects, and LIGNA gives us the space to build it. We’re eager to share our latest innovations and work with users to meet the industry’s evolving challenges.”
