When investing in tools, it’s essential that professionals not only understand how to use them, but also how to maintain and store these correctly to ensure both user safety and equipment longevity. In this article, Tony Coleman, Technical Services Manager at Makita, explains more

Whether you’re based in a workshop or on-site carrying out fit-outs, tool training is highly advisable. In addition to basic instructions and user manuals, reputable tool manufacturers should offer comprehensive training that covers everything from tool operation and essential health and safety guidance to best practice. This may include demonstrations, hands-on sessions, site-specific advice and on-site risk assessments.

Training is vital not only for apprentices and those starting out in their careers, but also for seasoned tradespeople. Even tools that feel familiar are constantly evolving as new technologies are introduced. Understanding how to confidently use all features can significantly improve results.

Health & safety

Undertaking tool training is imperative. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), there’s been a 70% increase in construction-related workplace fatalities since the 2020 pandemic – an alarming statistic. With the implementation of consistent health and safety refresher courses and regular tool operation training, professionals can remain safe while performing daily tasks.

Tool manufacturers should offer training that covers how to work safely, including the use of appropriate PPE to protect hearing and respiratory health. They should also provide sector-specific training for high-risk tasks such as sanding or cutting wood for extended periods.

Leading manufacturers like Makita can demonstrate how to correctly use equipment such as M- and H-class rated EU-approved dust extractors to ensure worksites remain safe from hazardous

dust. Training can also raise awareness of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and how to minimise its risk, as well as highlighting technologies – such as low-vibration systems – which are built into tools to protect users. Thorough training ensures that all individuals using, supervising, or managing work equipment receive clear and adequate health and safety information.

 Selecting the right training

Leading tool manufacturers such as Makita have dedicated training teams that offer a range of sessions, held at one of four Factory Service Centres (FSCs) located across the UK. For added convenience, many of Makita’s training and awareness sessions can also be delivered on-site, allowing all employees to participate without leaving the workplace.

When selecting a safety course, consider one certified by an independent third party such as City & Guilds. For example, Makita offers City & Guilds-accredited ‘Correct and Safe Use’ courses at both instructor and user levels. These combine theory and hands-on training to cover best practices, safe handling and storage of power tools, health and safety protocols in addition to PPE policies.

Training plays a crucial role in promoting safe and effective working practices and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. Even for experienced professionals, comprehensive training in the correct use of power tools is invaluable.
